Jim Edgar
As we mark the 15th anniversary of The Avenue – LearnIT2teach Project, we also celebrate the remarkable contributions of Jim Edgar, who is retiring after 15 years of leadership, innovation, and dedication to the field of educational technology and Canadian settlement language learning.
From the very inception of the project on January 1, 2010, Jim has been a major guiding force. His exceptional skills in educational technology, combined with a clear vision for the future, have helped transform Avenue – LearnIT2teach into a vital resource for newcomers and language educators across Canada. His ability to build and manage teams with professionalism, care, and insight has ensured the project’s long-term success.

Jim’s journey in educational technology began well before Avenue. In the early 90s, he was putting online learning technology like Apple HyperCard to work as a language educator. As an early adopter of Moodle at Dubai Men’s College, he pioneered digital learning environments, establishing a groundbreaking Moodle service for English language learners. His expertise extended beyond the classroom, as he generously shared knowledge through his website, ‘Jim’s Learner Links’, and as a sought-after presenter in the Gulf region.
Beyond Avenue, Jim’s career spans decades of impactful contributions. He has held TESL educator roles at Algonquin College, Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, and Carleton University, no doubt inspiring learners and colleagues wherever he worked. Jim has worked extensively in instructional design, curriculum writing, and e-learning consultancy, influencing both educational institutions and national language training programs. His leadership in e-learning extended to advisory roles with the Toronto Catholic District School Board, the Higher Colleges of Technology in Dubai, and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (IRCC). Jim has also been a key contributor to SCORM Learning Object development, hybrid ESL course design, and online ESL exam preparation.
Jim’s Avenue – LearnIT2teach Project responsibilities have included designing and managing the teacher training, eModule of learner courseware, in-service support like Live Help and help files. He has led the charge in implementing cutting-edge learning technologies, enhancing the teaching experience for both educators and students. He has been intimately involved in all aspects of the project including financial management, government and settlement language sector relations and communications.
Throughout his tenure with New Language Solutions, Jim has mentored countless instructors, trained educators and managers, and provided support to learners. His work has reshaped how technology is used in settlement language training, bridging gaps and opening new pathways for learning.
We also commend Jim for his methodical and thoughtful approach to his retirement. His careful planning has ensured that a capable and dedicated team remains in place, ready to carry forward the mission he has so passionately championed.
