Avenue Canada Launches Canada-Wide Search for Employment-Focused Language Training Resources

Avenue Canada Solutions, formerly New Language Solutions, has launched a Canada-wide research initiative to identify, review, and make more accessible high-quality employment-focused language training resources developed for newcomers to Canada.
The Employment-Focused Curriculum Inventory and Resource Compendium Initiative is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD). While the project is supported by the Government of Ontario, the research itself is national in scope. We are looking across Canada for existing English and French resources that can support employment-focused language learning and teaching.
Our goal is to identify the considerable work that has already been done by settlement language training organizations, educational institutions, governments, sector organizations, and other contributors. Rather than duplicating existing resources, the project will help educators find and make better use of materials that have already been developed.
The research will examine fully developed employment-related language training resources, with particular interest in materials developed or published within approximately the last 10 years. Resources may be in English or French and in digital or print formats. They might address workplace communication, occupation-specific language, job search and employment preparation, workplace culture, language for specific sectors or occupations, or other areas connecting language learning with employment.

An important outcome of the project will be an open online inventory and resource compendium designed to make relevant resources easier to discover and access. The resource will be openly available to settlement language training educators and organizations from coast to coast to coast, regardless of province, territory, funding stream, or learning platform.

We are therefore reaching out to settlement language training service provider organizations across Canada for help.
If your organization has developed a substantial employment-related language learning or teaching resource, or if you know of a valuable resource developed elsewhere, we would like to hear from you. We are particularly interested in resources that can be accessed and used by other organizations and educators.
The initiative is being led by Marcela Alfonso, Team Lead, working with the Avenue Canada research team. Please send the resource title and link, along with brief information about the organization that developed it and how it can be accessed, to Marcela.alfonso@avenue.ca.
This is an opportunity to bring greater visibility to the excellent work that has already been undertaken across Canada’s settlement language training sector and to make that work more readily available to colleagues nationally.
We encourage you to share this invitation with colleagues and organizations in your networks. The broader our reach, the more useful and representative the resulting national resource can be.
Sharing is caring!
