The Orientation to Avenue.ca is a brief, self-directed course created for TESL students, stakeholders, and interested language training professionals to help them understand how Avenue.ca is used and its role in Canadian immigrant settlement language training.
This interactive course covers four main topics. A Glossary of Terms helps with unfamiliar terminology.
The first topic, Avenue.ca and Settlement Language Training in Canada, provides background information to the sector that Avenue serves, including an overview of the Canadian Language Benchmarks, Portfolio based Language Assessment (PBLA), modes of program delivery (online, blended, face-to-face), and a brief introduction to Tutela.ca.
The next section, Learning Management System and Avenue Essentials, introduces the concept of a learning management system and it explains some of the unique features of the Avenue site.
Participants are introduced to a sample Avenue eUnit in the next section, Exploring the Courseware. An interactive video explains the structure of a PBLA-compatible eUnit, and participants are encouraged to explore a sample eUnit, Canada: People and Diversity.
The final section, LearnIT2Teach Overview, informs participants about the training and support available to eligible language training professionals on Avenue, such as the four instructor training stages, the Avenue Learning Leadership courses, and Formation Avenue which provides training for teachers of French settlement language training..
The course fills an important gap for teachers not yet employed in LINC or CLIC and ineligible for our LearnIT2teach training. If you want individual access, fill out this form to request access. A certificate will be awarded on completion.
This course is suitable to be integrated into college or university TESL preparation programs. A copy of the course will be provided to programs on request. If you are a TESL educator, you should email admin@learnit2teach.ca for more information.
